THEAldactone (spironolactone), an aldosterone receptor causes the elimination of water and sodium from the body. This compound thus reduces potassium losses. Generally, it is used to reduce edema caused by heart, liver or kidney problems, hypertension and for patients with hyperaldosteronism.

Bodybuilders use it as a diuretic and take it several days before a contest to get a torn and dry physique.

Information about Spironolactone:

Spironolactone is an aldosterone antagonist and is also considered a diuretic. It prevents Aldosterone from binding to receptor sites and inhibits certain electrolyte exchanges. Then it excretes water and sodium from the body while retaining potassium. What distinguishes it from similar products such as Lasix.

Potassium sparing diuretics are mild and have weak diuretic effects. However, athletes should be careful not to take potassium while taking these products as this will increase serum potassium levels. Which would be dangerous.

As it is an anti-androgen, Spironolactone is particularly popular among female athletes due to its ability to minimize the virilizing effects of anabolic steroids. Women usually take 50 mg per day and can take up to 2 weeks.

As a mild diuretic, with a fairly long half-life, bodybuilders use Spironolactone a week before their competition to dry and excrete water. A dose of 25 mg twice a day is recommended.
