Lee Haney, a life dedicated to bodybuilding

As soon as we pronounce his name, we immediately think of his eight victories at Mr Olympia between 1984 and 1991. Lee Haney is known and recognized worldwide for holding with Ronnie Coleman, record number of wins in the very famous bodybuilding competition.

Now retired, Lee Haney hosts a program on a high-audience American Christian channel, the “Trinity Broadcasting Network”. In this show, Lee Haney conveys the importance of cultivating one's physical development, in relation to his spiritual development. During the broadcast, he is often joined by sports personalities.

But, beyond his incredible victories and his TV show, do we really perceive to what extent, Lee Haney has dedicated his life to Bodybuilding? Much more than a sporting discipline, Lee Haney made bodybuilding his passion, his education and his life path.

Passionate about muscle since he was 6 years old:

While some bodybuilders have come to bodybuilding through other sports, Lee Haney has had an overwhelming passion for muscle from a young age. Born in 1956 in Georgia, Lee Haney quickly developed his fascination for bodybuilding. Indeed, at 6 years old, his models are already Samson of the Old Testament and the famous Hercules of Greek Mythology. From this moment, only one thing will count in the eyes of the child: manage to acquire the muscular physique of his idols.

Endowed with a strong personality and an unshakable determination, at the age of 10, Lee Haney asked his parents for his first weights. Listening to their son's wishes, Lee Haney's parents therefore offer him his first weights as a Christmas present. The present is even accompanied by a training book, the famous Charles Atlas. This book will be his source of inspiration and motivation. True bible of bodybuilding, he will draw a large part of his knowledge in terms of training and nutrition.

Encouraged by his parents, Lee Haney creates his world around bodybuilding. He is documented in the best bodybuilding magazines such as Muscle and Fitness and Muscle Builder by Joe Weider. He hangs posters of recognized bodybuilders on the walls of his bedroom.

Bodybuilding is his reason for living. So much so that at the age of 14, his father, a welder, made him a T-bar rowing machine. Lee Haney trains at home, drawing inspiration from information gleaned from magazines. One day he too, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, will become a bodybuilding legend. Lee Haney knows it and is getting ready ...

His path to professionalism:

The weight lifting at home, begins to draw the muscles of Lee Haney. He then decides to join the local YMCA. There he will meet Danny Rogers, who will perceive the full potential of Lee Haney upon his arrival. He then takes him under his wing for 4 years, to lead him towards the path of professionalism. He will teach him in particular how to lift the weights correctly. In 1973, Lee Haney now offers an already harmonious musculature.

His physique attracts sympathy and Lee is invited to join various sports disciplines in high school, such as football, athletics and Basketball.

His performances even earned him a scholarship to return to university. Despite this honor, Lee Haney does not forget his dream of becoming professional bodybuilders.

After exposing his parents to his intentions, Lee Haney leaves the path of studies to devote himself solely to his passion, bodybuilding.

His years of competitions:

Lee Haney will discover the world of competition, for the first time in 1975, for the competition of Mr. South Carolina. He's 16. This is his first show. He is not at all prepared for this universe and therefore parades while walking, with an inappropriate outfit. His ignorance of the codes of competition will not allow him to rank. But instead of being discouraged by this defeat, young Lee has just caught the challenge virus.

He will then prepare for three years. And in 1979, Lee Haney entered the M. América competition (in the young category), with a more than advantageous physique, an imposing musculature and a solid confidence. These efforts are paying off. His dream takes shape. Lee Haney just won his first competition!

But far from losing his mind with this first victory, Lee Haney retired for three years from competitions. He seeks excellence. In his quest for perfection, he will continue to sculpt his body in order to achieve in 1982 the most surprising physique of all time.

Now, nothing can stop the rising star. Lee Haney won in 1982 the Juniors Nationals (heavyweight category) and the Amateur World Championship. These victories give him access to his professional bodybuilding card. Lee Haney is then 23 years old, his dream comes true. He becomes professional.

In 1983, Lee Haney took part in many competitions as a professional and was placed among the 7, the most honorable:

  • British Grand Prix, 2e
  • Las Vegas Grand Prix, 1st
  • Swedish Grand Prix, 2e
  • Swiss Grand Prix, 3e
  • Night of Champions, 1st
  • M. Olympia, 3rd
  • The Professional World Championship, 3rd

Lee Haney becomes a legend:

By believing in his dream, Lee Haney will even manage to overtake him by winning 8 times the victory of Mr. Olympia between 1984 and 1991. Lee Haney has just broken the record of his idol Arnold Schwarzenegger (holding 7 titles from Mr. Olympia). Lee Haney is no longer a professional bodybuilder. He becomes a true bodybuilding legend.

Lee Haney is a complete man today. He hosts his show by sharing his ideology of combining body and mind to find harmony. He also wrote books on his passion and created his own brand of sports supplements.
